When you are 3 years old, naptime should not be optional. It's just one of those things I believe in. Unfortunately, these days Jack doesn't seem to agree. Maybe it has something to do with taking a break from preschool and a regular schedule. I feel like I'm doing everything I can to make sure he gets worn out in the mornings, but I guess I'll have to work harder. It's not that I even manage to get much done during naptime these days, but without that much needed nap, that sweet preschooler turns into a terror by dinnertime.
We pulled up to our first day of swim lessons at 6 pm tonight at which point he says, "I'm sooo tired." He hadn't even gotten out of the car yet! Or what about his full-on meltdown when it was time to get out of the pool an hour later and leave. Or the fit he pitched when we couldn't stay and play at a sweet friend's house as I stopped for a quick errand on the way home. I was so exhausted by the time I put them to bed, I immediately drew a bath. Something I rarely do, but it was the closest I was getting to a vacation tonight.
Also this week, we've learned that Sam is a fan of Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers from Wendy's. He'll actually sit still for a minute if he thinks he's about to get a bite.

A Plain Old Great Day
Well, Sunday started off far from "great," but it sure finished strong. Josh was showering, Sam was fed and I was pretty much completely dressed and ready for church (things were great and on schedule for me to arrive early to teach a preschool Sunday School class this week), when I went upstairs to get Jack up and dressed. I was greeted with a bit of a mess. Seems our big guy had a bit of an upset stomach during the night.
Of course, my mind immediately recalled a crying spell heard over the monitor sometime around 3:30 that I pretty much ignored thinking he'd go back to sleep...which he did. Now, I felt like a complete failure for having ignored my sweet son's pleas for help. My poor child had called for me and eventually gave up. I had disappointed him. Thankfully my husband reassured me that I had not in fact scarred our son for life and that I was a fantastic mommy. He also volunteered to stay home with the boys.
So, I drove off to church still feeling the heavy burden of mommy guilt. But, as four-year-olds arrived one after another, I was met with smiling faces and eager hearts. I sat in on the beginning of the service to watch the graduate recognition and the sweet slideshow that preceded. I cried for the second time that morning. After a dash to Ingles for Gatorade, I arrived home to find three happy boys. Jack had even had a bit to eat with no incident.
I fixed a quick lunch and then everyone took a nap. Mine was interrupted by a hungry three-month-old, but I quickly got him satisfied and back to dream land. Naps are so much more satisfying when the whole house is indulging! Jack awoke still feeling good. So after a bath, we headed to church for his end-of-the-year preschool celebration and program. As you can see his part was very minor, but fun nonetheless.
What better way to celebrate the end of the year than a trip to McDonald's, right? We finished our night out with a stop at the park. I have the incredible opportunity to spend many days with Jack and Sam at the park, usually with good friends alongside us. It is a rare opportunity to get to enjoy the park with daddy too. Jack took advantage by taking his first ever pass on the monkey bars...and it wasn't his last.

Update
Just wanted to update you all on our first night in the big boy bed. Jack did fantastic! The delivery men arrived just before 4 and got to work setting up the new furniture. It looks great, but certainly makes Jack's room seem SOOO much smaller. Jack was excited to climb on the bed and enjoyed asking "Daddy up here?" He really enjoyed having extra space to share in his new bed.
Once bedtime arrived Jack was worn out from the busy day, the lack of a nap and the fact that he was a little under the weather. We went through our typical routine and he quickly climbed into his bed. After getting into place, he was a little hesitant to actually lay down and seemed kind of worried. After some reassurance from mom & dad, he seemed to warm up to the idea that this was his new sleeping arrangement.
Josh & I got to work across the hall putting the crib back together in Sam's room. I just kept expecting Jack to come bouncing in the room. Thankfully, he seemed to sleep pretty well. Although I told him to call for us when he was ready to get up and I would come help him, I didn't expect he would. So, a little after 7 this morning I heard him calling, "Mommy?" I rounded the corner to find him at the top of the stairs. When he saw me he said, "Hey, Mommy!"
The real test is taking place as I type...naptime. I wasn't sure he'd be able to resist the urge to get down and explore or play with the daylight flooding in the windows. (Must invest in knock-out drapes.) So far, I haven't heard him creeping out. I'm sure it helped that I took him to the park for a couple of hours of energy-draining fun! We had a wonderful time with Gus, Mack & Erin. We were so pumped to have such a beautiful day to enjoy! Loving this respite from the teens & 20s!

Best Nap Ever
I think I had the best nap of my life yesterday afternoon. Just thinking about it sort of returns me to the sheer bliss! I guess I have to set up the story, so you can learn how to also achieve the best nap ever. It all starts with a ridiculously fun weekend.
Friday afternoon our MOPS group left for our retreat in Clayton at Camp Pinnacle. My mom graciously agreed to come and watch Jack until Josh was home from work. Later that evening Josh's buddy Ben and his son Ben Jr. would be coming up for the weekend. After our steering team made a stop at the SUPER Wal-Mart in Clayton for much needed supplies (ie. Oreos, Reese's PB Eggs, Cokes, Candy...), we got settled in the cabin at Camp Pinnacle. Once the moms began to arrive, we split into teams and began a scavenger hunt around Clayton. There were a few items to collect, but the majority of the hunt involved capturing photos of places or things taking place. It was oh so much fun.
Later we met for dinner at Mama G's and then retired to the cabin. Only there wasn't much retiring. Most of us stayed up pretty late playing games, laughing, snacking and then crept into our sleeping bags for a couple hours of rest before our 7:30 wake-up call. We enjoyed yummy Chick-n-minis and cinnamon clusters from Chick-fil-A before returning home...making the early departure much easier.
Once home, I joined the boys (Josh, Jack, Ben & Ben) for their late breakfast. Soon after Ben headed to pick up Wendy. The rest of us stayed and played. Ben, Jr. & Jack took a bubble bath, which Jack enjoyed until we turned the jets on. Then he was done! After he got out, we turned them back on and let the bath become a tub of frothy bubbles. Ben, Jr. loved it. Then, we all headed to Chuck E. Cheese.
I thought there might be a chance that Jack would hate CEC and we would then have an excuse to never go back. It's actually not that bad, but Saturday afternoons are pretty much the worst! At least we didn't encounter any vomit! Anyway, Jack loved CEC! He devoured the pizza. Oh, and thanks to daddy we discovered he likes root beer too.
Sunday the Pucketts joined us at church. We enjoyed an awesome lunch at Hawg Wild. Love that place and it's incredible sweet potato fries. After the Pucketts departed for home around 2:45, Josh set out to mow the front yard. I put Jack down for a much-needed nap. I quickly studied up for my KidzLife duties at church then crawled in bed myself. I remember waking up when Josh came in about 20 minutes later, but he didn't bother waking me again when he left for drama practice at church. Thankfully, I did wake up in plenty of time to make it to church by 5:30, but it was one of the best naps ever. I'm pretty sure there was drool to prove it! LOL!

Snoozing away
Last night, we were walking around in the yard and I caught a glimpse of how pretty the sky was. It was just after sunset and the sky was that beautiful purple and pink color, and we could see the mountains in the distance. We have such a lovely view from the bac
